Who can forget Prince William and Kate driving out of Buckingham Palace in Prince Charles’ vintage Aston Martin on their wedding day?
But it’s not the first time this iconic British car has stolen the limelight. Think of James Bond’s metallic green DBS in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Tipi Hedren in her silver Aston Martin DB2/4 drophead coupe in The Birds or Roger Moore’s Bahama Yellow Aston Martin DBS in The Persuaders. No other sports car has such a distinctive and individual character, in part because so few were every made – less than 10,000 in nearly 70 years.
Aston Martin – the early days
Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford formed the company in 1913, originally to sell Singer cars and prepare them for racing and hill climbing. Lionel Martin raced cars at Aston Hill near Aston Clinton, and in 1915 he produced their first car. Production was halted by the war, but started up again at new premises in Kensington shortly afterwards.
Sports Car Racing Glory
In the 1920’s the firm had several racing successes, including the French Grand Prix and the Le Mans 12 hour race. However, the pair were better at building cars than being businessmen, and the company went bust. It was bought in 1947 by David Brown, and in 1951 the DB2 came first, second and third in the 3-litre class at Le Mans. The DB2/4 Mark II came along in 1955 with the DB Mark III following in 1957 and the DB4 in 1958.
Launch of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage
The 1970’s saw the birth of the V8 Vantage range, and the Aston Martin Lagonda went into production in 1980. The 21st century has seen Aston Martin go from strength to strength, with the 7,000th DB7 being built, the opening of its first purpose built factory at Gaydon in 2003 and a return to racing in 2005. The V8 Vantage Roadster, V12 Vantage, Rapide four door concept car, V12 Vanquish S and DB9 Volante were all launched during this decade, proving that the values of power, beauty and soul are as much a part of the Aston Martin ethos now as they were when it was first founded, nearly 100 years ago.

Pride of place in our fleet is the Aston Martin DBS coupe, a two-door with swan-wing doors and hand-built V12 engine which combines g-force speed with glorious handling and minimalist luxury. We also have the Aston Martin DB9 Volante Touchtronic II, the car that Top Gear considered ‘too cool’ for the Cool Wall, and invented a new category, dubbed the ‘DB9 Sub Zero Fridge’.
